How does commercial equipment finance work in the UK?

Most UK hospitality operators fund equipment through hire purchase or a lease. With hire purchase you pay a deposit and fixed monthly instalments, and you own the asset at the end. With a lease you rent the equipment for an agreed term, sometimes with an option to purchase or upgrade. Either way, the lender is pricing the risk of the asset and the strength of your trading history, so quotes vary significantly between providers.

What affects your monthly payment?

Four inputs dominate: the price of the equipment, how much deposit you put down, the interest rate, and the length of the term. Increasing the deposit or shortening the term reduces the total finance cost but raises the monthly commitment. Stretching the term does the opposite — it protects monthly cashflow and quietly increases what you pay overall.

Should you finance used equipment?

Yes, and many lenders do fund quality used assets, though they may require a shorter term or a larger deposit because the remaining life is shorter. The advantage is straightforward: a lower purchase price means less borrowing, a smaller finance cost and a repayment that is easier to cover from trading.

Questions worth asking a lender

  • What is the total amount payable, including every fee?
  • Is there a documentation fee, option-to-purchase fee or final balloon payment?
  • Can you settle early, and what does early settlement cost?
  • Do you own the asset at the end of the agreement, or return it?

Frequently asked questions

How are equipment finance payments calculated?

Most agreements use a standard amortising repayment: the amount borrowed after your deposit, spread across the term, with interest applied to the outstanding balance. This calculator uses that same standard repayment formula with the rate and term you enter.

How does the deposit affect monthly payments?

A larger deposit reduces the amount borrowed, which lowers both the monthly payment and the total interest paid. It also reduces the lender's exposure, which can sometimes improve the rate offered.

Does a longer term reduce monthly payments?

Yes, but it usually increases the total cost. A longer term spreads the same borrowing across more months, lowering each payment while interest accrues for longer.

What is the total cost of equipment finance?

Add your deposit to the sum of all repayments. The difference between that figure and the equipment price is the finance cost. Real-world agreements may also include documentation, option-to-purchase or early settlement fees.
